Grand Opening of New Police Service Center is Oct. 25

Why: To celebrate the opening of the city’s newest police service center. The program includes Mayor Robert Cluck, Arlington City Council members, Police Chief Theron Bowman and Community Services Director Lee Hitchcock. Ceremony also includes a posting of colors by the Arlington Police Honor Guard and ribbon cutting. Program will be followed by a reception and tours.
Background
The $6.2 million facility serves the southern communities of Arlington, primarily south of Interstate 20 which is home to more than 100,000 residents. With 25,300 square feet of space, the South Police Service Center is the largest of the city’s two police substations. Arlington voters authorized funding for the new center in a February 2003 bond election.
Currently, the center houses 35 law enforcement officers. Police officials say the number of law enforcement personnel will increase to 90 after police redistricting is completed in January. Three canine officers, four foot patrol officers and additional retail district officers will move into the center in Jan. 2009. The city’s Community Services Department also has a presence in the center with 15 code enforcement personnel, which includes seven south district code compliance officers. In addition to code compliance activities, the department will administer programs to help address vacant and substandard housing in the south district.
The South Arlington Police Service Center will be open 24 hours a day. Police Chief Theron Bowman said the new center will help to enhance community policing initiatives in south Arlington and help to maintain rapid response times. Interim Assistant Police Chief James Hawthorne is the center’s commander.

Documentary Raises Awareness of Water Infrastructure in the U.S.
A 90-minute documentary is raising awareness about water and what cities and towns across the U.S. are doing to address aging infrastructure.
Liquid Assets airs at 4:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 26, on KERA Channel 13. Arlington residents can view the documentary on Arlington’s government cable channel 16 and on the web at arlingtontx.gov/webcast, beginning Oct. 27. See the broadcast schedule for times.
In a message to customers, Water Utilities Director Julia Hunt summarizes what Arlington is doing to address its infrastructure needs. Her message is posted on the City’s web site and cable channel. The City of Arlington is joining the American Water Works Association and other north Texas communities in encouraging more public dialogue about water infrastructure.
“Life as we know it would be impossible without water,” Hunt said. “Water infrastructure is vital for disease control, fire protection, basic sanitation, economic development and overall quality of life. Arlington, like many cities and towns across America, is working to maintain and improve water infrastructure.”

Self-Defense Class for Women - Carrollton Police Department Training Room
The Rape Aggression Defense (R.A.D.) System is a program of realistic self-defense tactics and techniques for women. Class will be held each Monday from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. October 20 until November 10 at the Carrollton Police Department Training Room (2025 E. Jackson Road). The cost for the program is $5 total for all four Monday classes.
The R.A.D. System is a comprehensive, women-only course that begins with awareness, prevention, risk reduction and risk avoidance, while progressing on to the basics of hands-on defense training. R.A.D. is not a Martial Arts program. Courses are taught by nationally certified R.A.D. Instructors and provide each student with a workbook/reference manual that outlines the entire Physical Defense Program for reference and continuous personal growth. There is also a free lifetime return and practice policy for R.A.D. graduates.
Attendees of the class should dress comfortably. Sweatpants and workout pants/shorts are acceptable, along with comfortable tennis shoes.

Grapevine, TX (Aug. 25, 2008) – The changing image of the Palace… Long known as the home of the Grapevine Opry, the historic Palace Arts Center is now bringing more popular singer-songwriters to the stage. Rainy Days Didn’t Stop Festival-Goers at 22nd Annual GrapeFest
Grapevine, Texas (Sept. 16, 2008) — Grapevine’s 22nd annual GrapeFest — Lone Star Grown, Internationally Known — in Historic Downtown Grapevine was another success despite the rain on Saturday. GrapeFest never cancelled and activities continued as scheduled on Saturday, Sept. 13. Festival-goers made their way out to GrapeFest for four full days of fun which took place September 11, 12, 13 & 14, where 205,350 patrons visited the largest wine festival in the Southwest and enjoyed award winning Texas wines, great food, beverages, and family fun. GrapeFest attendance on Friday, Sept. 12 increased by 25 percent compared to Friday of last year’s event. Sunday’s attendance at GrapeFest increased by 40 percent from Sunday at last year’s GrapeFest.
“For the 22nd annual GrapeFest, we certainly made it our goal to make this an event that people of all ages could enjoy,” said Dr. Curtis Ratliff, who chaired the festival with his wife, Linda. “To host this world-class festival and draw more than 200,000 people with inclement weather truly is a great success.” Recently named a Top 100 Event in North America for the third year in a row by the American Bus Association, GrapeFest has definitely secured its place as the festival to beat all festivals.
One of the premier highlights at GrapeFest is the People’s Choice Wine Tasting Classic, the largest consumer-judged wine competition in the nation. This year, this event featured 126 Texas wines from 36 of the state’s wineries.
